Pigment

Products ;

Hydrocarb 90-OG : Natural, ultrafine calcium carbonate powder, manufactured from a high purity,white limestone

Applications-

Pigment improves paper smoothness, brightness ,opacity and ink absorption.
It is used as Pigment in the Coating application and as filler in the wet end application.
Carbonate may be PCC or GCC.
PCC used for wet end application due to its less abbrassive particles,high bulky and high brightness characteristics.
GCC is widely used in the coating application because of its lower cost and low viscosity(better rheology) characteristics.
The particle size decides the suitability of the product for pre-coating or top-coating application.
The Calcium carbonate in the powder form need to be re-dispersed with the help of dispersing agent.

Binder

Applications-

Binder modifies the properties of coating color ( e g rheology, water retention) or coating
Binder are either modified natural products ( I e starch or protein based) or synthetic polymers. They form a film, whose properties combine with those of the pigment to give the desired coated paper properties.

Co-Binder

Applications-

Is a secondary binder used along with primary binder to improve the rheological properties of the coating color.
Used as a Binder in the formulation.
Develops higher water retention to the coating color.
Improves the surface strength of the coated paper.
Reduction in coating slip cost.
Improvement in the stiffness of the coated paper/paper board.
Potato starch is preferred due its clear,stable and high binding power characteristic.
Better ink adsorbency(receptivity).
Compatible with all kinds of Latex.
Better rheology,less mottling, low odour and taste,less yellowing and stable viscosity.

Insolubilizer

Applications

Improves the water resistance and wet rub resistance of the adhesive for offset grades and when printing by water based inks.

Lubricant

Products:

LB-50 is a dispersed calcium stearate lubricant.It is well known for its effectiveness in both starch and casein coatings.

Application

These are used to improve the coater runnablility, give release properties to the sheet, reduce dusting, reduce picking and improve gloss. As a part of their function, they may alter the rheological properties of the coating mixture to match the coating process requirement.
Lubricants are used in the coating formulation for developing the lubricating effect between the coating color,applicating unit and the paper.
Normally,these are Calcium sterate based product.
The lubricants also improves the smoothness of the coating surface and so also controls the dusting.
Lubricants will improve the life of the applicator blade/rod and there by reduces the problem of streaking at the time of coating application.
To develop in-solublising character to the binder by developing hydrophobicity.
The cross-linking of the –OH and –COOH groups of the binders.
Improves the curing rate of the coating and gives the Wet rub resistance to the coated surface of the paper/paperboard.
IGT of the coated paper is improved.
Dusting and miss-registration problem during the printing process is minimised to a greater extent.

Dispersant

Products:

HOSPERSE-PA40 is an organic dispersant specially developed as viscosity reducing stabilizer for water borne paint and various pigment slurries used in the preparation of aqueous dispersions.

Application

Used to prevent pigment agglomeration in coating colour.
They are used to disperse the pigments like Cal.carbonate,Clay,Titanium di-oxide,etc.
They are Polyacrylates.
They are anionic in nature and develops a repulsive force between the pigment particles there by avoiding settling or re-agglomeration.
The stability of the pigment slurry is mainly dependent on the performance of the dispersant.
The dispersant helps in maintaining the stable rheological properties of the pigment slurry.
